In the footsteps of Alice Blanche Balfour

In 2018, on a visit to the entomology collections at the National Museum of Scotland, I came across a lady who I had heard of, but knew very little about. Since that first encounter, she has taught me many things about the moths of East Lothian and opened up all sorts of doors of mothy opportunity. Her name: Alice Blanche Balfour. My biggest disappointment: that I will never get to meet her in person. She lived between 1850 and 1936.

Read more about my adventures following in Alice’s footsteps in my blog, Rediscovering the moths of Whittingehame.

You can hear me chat about the inspiration Alice has given me in my own moth recording on BBC AutumnWatch here (my piece starts at 15 mins in).
