In November, 2024 I was delighted to receive an award for Wildlife Recording from the NBN. This is one of several prizes awarded each year to individuals and groups who have made a different to biological recording.

As with all wildlife recorders, we do what we do for the love of it; the joy of spending time doing something outdoors, sharing our enthusiasm with others, being part of a friendly and supportive community of like-minded nature-nerds, and for me in particular, trying to work out why moths do what they do in the spirit of a Victorian gentleman naturalist! I do spend A LOT (my family might suggest ALL) of my free time with moths and other natural history ventures, giving talks, doing surveys, supporting other recorders, so it is nice to be recognised for that. Goodness knows how mch £££ equivalent is provided by the volunteer naturalist community in the UK, but let’s not know, as that would ruin it. So, huge thanks to the lovely people who nominated me and for the companies that sponsor the awards. Of course the ultimate prize would be to be awarded more time in the day (or night).
If you know of a deserving wildlife recorder (there are several categories to choose from) you can nominate them for this years’ award here.
